The League of nations. Men. Preliminary stage. Poland – Canada Referees: Epaminondas Gerontodoros (Athens, Greece), Fabrice Collado (France) The format of the League of Nations has undergone significant changes this year. If we take the pre-pandemic seasons (2018, 2019), then the national teams traveled around the world for five weeks, playing in groups of four from Friday to Sunday. In 2021, the tournament was held in a “bubble”: the teams in the group stage again played 15 matches, but in one place – Italian Rimini. This year, 16 teams will play 12 matches over three weeks. That is, it will not be the usual system of “each with each.” In this case, the standings will be general, which seems not entirely fair. Eight teams will gather in two cities, playing from Tuesday to Sunday. In the first week, the games are hosted by the capitals of Canada and Brazil – Ottawa and Brasilia. The organizers explained the choice of this format by taking care of volleyball players, who used to constantly complain about the hardest schedule. Now he is really more forgiving. Teams have a week between games to recover and travel. The top seven teams from the group stage and host Italy will advance to the Final Eight hosted by Bologna on 20-24 July. The teams will play quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches there.
